[64] Diop, [65] William Leo Hansberry, [65] and Aboubacry Moussa Lam [66] have argued that kmt was derived from the skin color of the Nile valley people, which Diop claimed was black. [67] The claim that the Ancient Egyptians had black skin has become a cornerstone of Afrocentric historiography. [65] Mainstream scholars hold that kmt means "the black land" or "the black place", and that this is a reference to the fertile black soil that was washed down from Central Africa by the annual Nile inundation.
