In 1917 the Original Dixieland Jass Band cut the first recorded jazz records in history. Typically, bossa nova (which means "new way" in Portuguese) is very mellow and laid-back, and very, very cool. Also known as bebop, bop was a radical new music that developed gradually in the early 1940s and seemed to explode in 1945. It sucked so bad we begged them to pipe in some Adult Contemporary. Rather than react to the mindless droning of those types of individuals, I will simply read their comments and accept the fact that should they ever take an I. You re going to find musicians, historians, sellers and general jazz aficionados listed here. Eventually, R&B metamorphized into soul, which was funkier and looser than the pile-driving rhythms of R&B. The music of the Big Bands became known as "Swing." I didn't need or want to listen to any other music. The European ingredients had more to do with classical qualities pertaining to harmony and melody.

Louisiana Hayride reached a broad national audience and hosted talents like Kitty Wells, Jim Reeves, Webb Pierce, Hank Williams, and Johnny Cash. But you may not know the slightest bit about the Banana Slugs. On the classic Miles Davis album Kind of Blue, the sparse arrangements leave room for the soloist to focus on the sound of his instrument in ways not explored before in jazz. In the 1940’s, Dizzy Gillespie’s seminal big band explored elements of Cuban folk music and helped give birth to Afro-Cuban jazz, or “cubop.” With the advent of the civil rights movement in the 1960’s, artists such as John Coltrane and Don Cherry began developing a distinctly pan-cultural approach to jazz, exploring African and Middle-Eastern influences and performing with musicians from other countries, making jazz an ideal vehicle for displaying the interconnection of all the world’s folk music.

And we had been friends ever since the first time I met him when I was 11. The two major styles of jazz during the racially-segregated 1920s broke down along ethnic lines. Rock 'n' Roll, R&B, and traditional pop ruled the charts while radio and television connected the country in our musical tastes and exposed the nation to a greater variety of artists and styles. In the spaced out synthesisers spectrum, modern Japanese artists as Yamazaki Maso (noisy avant garde experimentor who contributes to the Kawabata's projects named Andromelos, Christina 23 onna and Father Moo & the Black sheeps) or Takushi Yamazaki (Space Machine) are key figures.
