There are six known flavors of quarks: up(u), down(d), strange(s), charm(c), bottom(b), and top(b). Hess (awarded half the Prize in 1936 and the other half to Carl D. It is normally denoted by the letter T with the third component denoted as Tz, T3 or Iz. Fermi makes an instant estimate of its power by tossing some paper bits into the air at the time of ignition, then observing how far the bits are blown by the blast. (Fermi was about 10 miles from ground zero.) This event follows three years of frenzied labor at secret facilities located in Hanford, Washington; Oak Ridge, Tennessee; and Los Alamos, New Mexico.

The neutron is named for the fact that it's electrically neutral: neither positive nor negative, an electromagnetic cipher. Its lack of charge is why the neutron was discovered decades after the proton was: it's harder to manipulate with electromagnetic fields, and it's harder to detect.

Weak W boson nuclear force is responsible for the fact that all the more massive quarks & leptons rapidly decay into the lightest (and most stable) quarks & leptons. So, you see, your beta decay example does not violate what she taught you since the electron does not remain inside the nucleus after its creation. (Be sure to realize that the beta decay electron did not exist before the decay happened, it was not hanging around waiting to pop out.) I am a high school physics teacher, and am troubled somewhat by inverse beta decay.

The electromagnetic (called gamma rays) waves emitted from nuclei are much more energetic and thus of a far shorter wavelength than your eye can see.
