Despite my negative feelings about math, I am a huge fan of Steven Strogatz, author, columnist, and Professor of Applied Mathematics at Cornell University. This is a way of redirecting the lesson from teacher-to-student to student-to-student. The teacher then visits each station to do a mini-lesson. What was once a battle at home has turned into something he looks forward to and enjoys! These self-check items are compiled into a single checklist. You can also teach them hoe much money they would receive as change on buying an item.
